How to Spot a Fake-Free API

Introduction

"Free APIs" are a mixed bag. Some are genuinely free forever, some free for the first month, some demand a credit card up front, and some quietly train on your inputs. Building a product on the wrong kind of "free" is a fast way to inherit a billing surprise, a data-leak scandal, or an abrupt shutdown that takes your feature down with no warning. This article offers six practical checks to separate truly free endpoints from fake-free traps before you commit, so the migration cost never falls on you at the worst possible moment. The economic logic behind truly free tiers is worth understanding, because it predicts which ones will last. A free tier funded by a clear paid upgrade path (Together, Mistral, Groq) is sustainable because the provider monetizes the users who graduate to paid. A free tier with no visible monetization is a warning sign — it is either a temporary user-acquisition spend that will end, or it is subsidized by data collection, and neither is a stable foundation for a product.

Six Checks

  1. Is a credit card required? Sign-ups that demand a card up front usually end up charging. Truly free tiers (OpenRouter, Groq, Hugging Face) need only an email.
  2. Are SLA and rate limits public? Free tiers should still state RPM and TPM. If you cannot find rate limits anywhere in the docs, the service can disappear or throttle without notice.
  3. Data ownership terms: read the "data training" clause in the Terms of Service. Gemini's free tier explicitly says data may be used for training; the paid tier does not.
  4. Exit cost: can you export your data and config? Beware of stores that lock you into a proprietary schema with no migration path.
  5. Community reputation and shutdown risk: scan GitHub issues, Reddit, and Hacker News. There are documented cases of "free for a year, then suddenly shut down."
  6. Use a unified gateway: route every free key through one abstraction layer so you can swap or drop a provider in minutes, not weeks.

Practical Checklist

def call_chat(prompt, providers=["openrouter", "groq", "deepseek"]):
    for p in providers:
        try:
            return p.client.chat.completions.create(
                model=p.model,
                messages=[{"role": "user", "content": prompt}])
        except Exception as e:
            print(f"{p.name} failed: {e}")
    raise RuntimeError("all free providers down")

Truly Free vs Fake-Free

APIs safe for long-term dependency usually come from three sources. First, big-vendor open platforms (Google, Meta, NVIDIA) that treat free tiers as a marketing funnel for paid cloud. Second, strong community-driven open-source projects (Hugging Face, Coqui) with transparent roadmaps and active maintainers. Third, clear "free-trial-to-paid" funnels (Together, Mistral) where the free credit is explicitly a trial, not a perpetual tier. All three have transparent documentation and community oversight, with markedly lower shutdown risk than anonymous "free API" sites that surface and vanish within a single quarter. Treat the unified gateway as a permanent architectural fixture, not a temporary scaffold. Even after you move to paid providers, the abstraction layer that let you swap free providers is the same layer that lets you swap paid ones, chase better pricing, or add redundancy. Teams that build directly against a single provider's SDK pay a migration tax every time they switch; teams that build against their own gateway pay it once, at the beginning, and never again.
